Power Rankings: Bengals gaining on Colts

ESPN.com

ESPN.com's Power Rankings
The rankings were determined by a poll of ESPN.com's NFL staff -- writers John Clayton, Len Pasquarelli, Michael Smith, Scouts Inc. insiders Jeremy Green and Keith Kidd, and ESPN.com NFL editor Peter Lawrence-Riddell.
The Colts remain on top for the second straight week, again picking up four of six first-place votes. The Bengals and Seahawks picked up the other two first-place votes, with the Bengals jumping past the Seahawks into second. The Bears continued their impressive start, moving up two spots (No. 6 to No. 4) and into the top five. The Chargers, who jumped up despite being on a bye, round out the top five.

Saints fans probably won't be too happy with the rankings this week. Despite improving to 3-0, and being ranked as high as No. 4 on one ballot, the Saints only moved up three spots to No. 14. But if they keep playing the way they did Monday night it's going to be hard to keep them out of the top 10.

Anyway, on to the rankings. You can rank the teams yourself with SportsNation's NFL Power Rankings.

2006 Power Rankings: Week 4
  RK (LW) TEAM REC COMMENT
1 (1) Colts 3-0-0 Good win for a team that's beat up and clearly didn't play its best football. Peyton Manning made just enough plays.
2 (3) Bengals 3-0-0 Marvin Lewis said Odell Thurman's DUI arrest 'is not going to affect our football team.' That might be true, but at some point all the off-field issues are going to bite the Bengals.
3 (2) Seahawks 3-0-0 Going into Chicago without arguably the NFL's best running back is not what the Seahawks had in mind.
4 (6) Bears 3-0-0 Rex Grossman probably will have more bumpy games, but with the Bears defense, it might not matter.
5 (7) Chargers 2-0-0 They won't go one-on-one, but Shawne Merriman and Ray Lewis on the same field this Sunday should be fun to watch.
6 (8) Ravens 3-0-0 Offense isn't exactly on fire, but that was a game they wouldn't have won without Steve McNair.
7 (4) Jaguars 2-1-0 Maurice Jones-Drew looks really good. He was impressive against the Colts, putting up 103 yards on 13 carries.
8 (12) Broncos 2-1-0 Javon Walker is starting to look pretty good in a Broncos uniform. He flashed his big-play ability Sunday night against the Patriots.
9 (5) Falcons 2-1-0 When Michael Vick is contained, and he was Monday against the Saints, the Falcons are obviously going to struggle on offense.
10 (15) Eagles 2-1-0 Watching a defensive tackle run with the ball like Mike Patterson did has to be one of the best things in football.
11 (10) Patriots 2-1-0 It's easy to dissect and read too much into things, but Tom Brady just doesn't look quite right.
12 (9) Steelers 1-2-0 It's understandable that Ben Roethlisberger is still a little rusty. That said, the Steelers need him to start playing better now.
13 (13) Cowboys 1-1-0 Just in case you didn't know, it's 12 days and counting until T.O.'s return to Philly.
14 (17) Saints 3-0-0 Emotion was obviously a huge part of it, but the simple fact was that the Saints were just the better team Monday.
15 (14) Vikings 2-1-0 A 2-1 start would have to be considered a success in Minnesota. But they were so close to 3-0 and Brad Childress is already taking some heat for his play calling.
16 (11) Giants 1-2-0 Sure, Jeremy Shockey sort of apologized for his comments the other days. Still, just a hunch on our part, but things could get ugly in New York pretty fast.
17 (18) Rams 2-1-0 If the Rams keep playing defense like they are, they're going to be in contention in the NFC all season. They're already plus-seven in turnover differential.
18 (16) Panthers 1-2-0 Pretty easy to see how much better the Panthers are on offense when Steve Smith is in the offense.
19 (22) Jets 2-1-0 As long as Chad Pennington can stay healthy, the Jets are going to be a lot better than most people thought.
20 (24) Redskins 1-2-0 Pretty obvious that the Redskins are a totally different offensive team with Clinton Portis on track.
21 (21) Dolphins 1-2-0 Is there anyone out there killing more fantasy teams than Daunte Culpepper?
22 (19) Cardinals 1-2-0 Nothing is going to get you a seat faster than turning the ball over and Kurt Warner did that way too much -- enter Matt Leinart.
23 (20) Bills 1-2-0 J.P. Losman actually seems like he might be the QB of the future in Buffalo.
24 (26) Chiefs 0-2-0 A home game against the 49ers should be a good remedy for the Chiefs coming off their bye.
25 (25) 49ers 1-2-0 Frank Gore has been really good, but three fumbles in three games is too many. He'll start losing carries if that keeps up.
26 (30) Packers 1-2-0 Rookie wide receiver Greg Jennings really seems like he's going to be a player.
27 (23) Buccaneers 0-3-0 Amazing in the NFL how quickly a team can go from a playoff contender to staring a four or five-win season right in the face.
28 (28) Browns 0-3-0 You can question letting Charlie Frye throw the ball at the end of the game, but at some point you have to trust your players to make plays.
29 (27) Lions 0-3-0 Not a good start for team that some were picking to ride no-nonsense coach Rod Marinelli right into contention
30 (31) Titans 0-3-0 Kerry Collins' solid play Sunday might have held off the Vince Young debut for at least another week.
31 (31) Texans 0-3-0 Gary Kubiak called out Mario Williams and the rest of the defense. It's early in Williams' career, but this clearly isn't the kind of start he or the Texans would have hoped for
32 (32) Raiders 0-2-0 The Raiders can say Aaron Brooks will get his job back when he's healthy. But the reality is Andrew Walter shouldn't have to do too much to hold onto the job.
